Glossary

An explanation of some of the readings displayed on the current weather page.

TEMPERATURE  Outside air temperature (°C)  A measure of the average energy of molecules in the atmosphere.

HUMIDITY  Relative humidity (%) is the amount of water vapour present in the air expressed as a percentage of the amount of water vapour that the air is capable of holding.

DEW POINT  A measure of humidity stated in terms of the temperature at which the air would be saturated and dew would begin to form if the amount of water vapor in the air were held constant.

WIND  Wind speed  (Km/h). Wind direction. The direction from which the wind is blowing (expressed as a compass direction).

BAROMETER (Atmospheric Pressure)  The pressure exerted by the weight of the air above the observer. (1hPa = 1hectoPascal=1mbar)

TODAY'S RAIN  Total rain last 24 hours  reset at midnight

RAIN RATE  Rainfall rate (mm/hr) is a measure of how much rain falls in a unit of time.

STORM TOTAL  Storm total displays the rain total of the last rain event. The Davis Weather Instrument  takes .4mm to begin a rain event and 24 HOURS WITHOUT RAIN to end a rain event.

MONTHLY RAIN  Total rain for the  calendar month.

YEARLY RAIN Total rain calendar year.

WIND CHILL  Wind Chill (°C) takes into account how the speed of the wind affects our perception of the air temperature.  The faster the wind blows, the faster heat is carried away from your body and the colder you feel.

THW INDEX (Temperature Humidity Wind)  The THW Index uses humidity, temperature and wind to calculate an apparent temperature that incorporates the cooling effects of wind on our perception of temperature.
